Welcome

Captain William Lewis Herndon was a skipper of the Packet Central America that sailed from New York to Panama, a main routed for the California gold rush. On September 12, 1857, the ship sank in a storm off Cape Hatteras with the loss of 426 men including Herndon, who went down with his ship. Most of the women and children were rescued and Captain Herndon was praised for his orderly removal passengers, his disciplined crew, and his personal bravery.

History of this Web Site.
Back in the year of 2002, I wanted to build a web page for the Herndon Centennial.
Since that time this web page has grown into what it is today. Plans are to keep growing. If anyone has other info for this site please let me know.
